You come home and discover a hornets' nest on your balcony, a colony of rats in your cellar or dozens of cockroaches in your kitchen. Panic is understandable, but staying calm and taking the right steps is essential to manage the situation while you wait for a professional to step in. Here is a practical guide for each type of emergency.

Hornet or wasp emergency: stay away

Discovering a wasps' or hornets' nest is probably the most dangerous emergency situation. Rule number one is absolute: never try to destroy the nest yourself. A disturbed nest triggers a mass attack by the swarm, with dozens or even hundreds of stings in a few seconds. Immediately move children, pets and anyone else away from the area (a safety perimeter of at least 5 metres is recommended). If the nest is close to an entrance you use every day, use another way in while waiting for the treatment. Do not use consumer insecticide spray: it will only agitate the insects without destroying the nest. Close the windows and doors near the nest to stop individual insects from getting into your home. Call a professional immediately: at Mr Nuisibles, we provide emergency call-outs to destroy nests.

Rodent emergency: secure your food

If you suddenly notice rats or mice in large numbers (loud noises in the walls, rodents visible in broad daylight, lots of droppings), several immediate actions are needed. First, secure all your food in airtight glass or metal containers: rodents gnaw through plastic and cardboard without any difficulty. Close your bins with heavy lids or put them up high. Do not try to block holes yourself in a hurry with unsuitable materials (rags, newspaper): rodents will destroy them in a few minutes. Never handle a rodent, dead or alive, with your bare hands because of the risk of bites and disease transmission. If you have pets, remove their food bowls between meals. Make a note of the places where you have seen signs (droppings, gnawing) so that you can point them out to the technician during the treatment.

Cockroach emergency: limit the spread

Discovering a large number of cockroaches, especially in broad daylight, indicates a massive infestation. While waiting for the professional treatment, focus on limiting the spread. Immediately clean up any accessible food, including crumbs and grease residues. Empty and clean the bins. Dry all damp surfaces, as cockroaches cannot survive without water: this is the most effective way to stress them. Do not move furniture or appliances from one room to another, to avoid carrying cockroaches and their oothecae (egg cases) into uninfested areas. Do not use an insecticide spray: these products scatter cockroaches into other rooms and into neighbouring homes through the partition walls, making the professional treatment more complex. If possible, keep a cockroach in a jar so that the technician can identify the species.

Bed bug emergency: protect your bedding

If you discover a bed bug infestation (multiple bites, blood stains on the sheets, insects visible in the mattress), act methodically. Immediately wash all your bed linen, sheets, covers and pillowcases at 60 degrees minimum, then tumble-dry them at the maximum temperature for 30 minutes. Vacuum the mattress, bed base, skirting boards and cracks thoroughly, then immediately throw the vacuum bag into a closed outdoor bin. Do not move your mattress out of the bedroom: this risks spreading the bed bugs throughout the home. Do not sleep in another room, for the same reason. If possible, fit a full bed bug encasement on your mattress and bed base. These emergency measures limit the spread while you wait for the professional treatment.

What you must never do in an emergency

Whatever the emergency, certain mistakes invariably make the problem worse. Do not panic to the point of leaving your home in a rush, taking potentially contaminated belongings with you (clothes with bed bugs, bags with cockroaches). Do not keep adding shop-bought insecticide products: their accumulation is toxic to you without being effective against pests. Do not try to solve the problem alone with remedies found on the internet (essential oils, ultrasonic devices, home-made solutions): in a massive infestation, only a professional treatment is effective. Do not put your furniture out on the pavement without treating it first, as you risk spreading the infestation to neighbouring homes or to passers-by who pick up the furniture. Finally, do not delay calling a professional: every day that passes makes the situation worse.
